Well, people like bases, and this is a nice shot, also the fact that you used green magic with a pink pony, which are complimentary colors, creates a base image that is more attractive to the eye than some bases out there. Now with a base, since it will be recolored anyway, this shouldn't really matter, but monochrome bases or bases with good color hcoices attract the eye much more than random colors that clash. At the deviant Art display size to related images, the size of most art works are mostly blobs of color, so having a good color palatte in your artwork really helps attract  people to it. Try using some color theory in your original works and they are more likely to get appreciated a little more. Also, take some composition cues from something that people obviously like, such as this image, and try and translate that to your artwork. Capture an interesting moment with your character, and even with a non-base artwork, keep the background less distracting. Don't just throw your characters in front of us- use a focal point to tell us a little story about the character. This base has a good story in it, even though it lacks appealing details like a mane and tail for the pony due to is base(-ness?), it really shows us a character. From it, we already know  a few things without a lengthy explanation with words, and even if we had no prior knowledge of MLP:FIM: This is a unicorn, using magic, to hold a book, probably reading from it, and with a bit of a pompous or pious expression on there face. Perhaps they are a snob about their knowledge or the book they are reading from is sacred or important in some other way to the story. Just keep thinking about ways you can improve your artwork, and people will like it if you improve enough.
